Through this specially prepared workshop, attendees will have a unique opportunity to be introduced to industry standard models for wind turbine generator and solar PV for system steady state and transient state studies. Attendees will learn common configurations for microgrids to operate in both interconnected mode and in island mode. Special issues for renewable energy sources in power system design, operation and control will be discussed, including equipment sizing, power quality, transient responses, frequency and voltage control. Hands-on exercises are arranged using computer program to simulate various system operating conditions and test potential solutions.
Each participant is provided a computer with software loaded for use during the class time. Training will be handed by instructor with practical experience.
Objectives:
- Understand basic modeling techniques for wind turbine generators (WTG) and solar photovoltaic PV generation (Solar PV).
- Describe controls and dynamic models of WTG and Solar PV.
- Discuss features of microgrid operations with grid connection and in island mode.
- Investigate key operational issues associated with microgrids.
- Analyze and mitigate harmonic distortions.
- Learn renewable energy system modeling and simulation by computer tools.
- Study typical microgrid responses under intentional and unintentional operating conditions.
